Why is running for HYROX important? Plus a bit about Endorphins run community
Training for a HYROX event is vital, and let’s be honest, you don’t want to show up and find out that “running” isn’t just a leisurely jog to the fridge. Picture this: you’re lined up at the start, adrenaline pumping, and the whistle blows. You take off like a gazelle, only to realize that, surprise! You’re not in a 5K; you’re in a full-on 8 station “obstacle” course that combines running with various fitness challenges.
If you haven’t trained, you might find yourself gasping for air after the first 200 meters, wondering why that last Netflix binge seemed like a better idea than a solid training plan. Not to mention, running in a HYROX event isn’t just about speed; it’s about endurance and strength. So, if your idea of training consists of a brisk walk to the coffee shop, you might want to rethink your strategy.
In short, training is essential if you want to avoid being the person who needs to be airlifted out after the first round. So lace up those shoes, hit the pavement, and remember: you can’t outrun the consequences of skipping training. There are no shortcuts!
Of course my intro is a bit cynical, but running is a very important part of completing HYROX. Except for the teams, all other participants (single & duo’s) need to complete 8 kilometer (5 miles) of running. Its just a lot of running 🏃♂️ . Let’s say you can run a 4 minute kilometer, that would mean a 20 minute 5k. Thats pretty fast for an average runner. No rocket science, but that would imply 32 minutes of running at your HYROX.
Especially when you want to set a good time, running can be your biggest enemy.
My next HYROX race is in March 2025 Starting in September I included more running in my current workout schedule and set a goal to run the Philly half marathon. The strategy behind this is simple and twofold:
Running motivation, knowing I need to put the miles in to complete the half healthy and enjoy running it.
Building a good BASE for the new year.
Obviously this impacts my time spent on strength and HIIT workouts, but that’s ok. I’m in maintenance mode and focus on running specific strength training (more on that in a new blog). And I really like running too….
Another motivator to get miles in, is to run with a group. My daughter run’s with the Endorphins run club and she said: “dad, you need to check them out”.
Today, Saturday October 12th I ran with the endorphins running community in Philly. Saturday’s is their long run, and today they had a 15 miles run on the schedule. I think there were over 60 runners who could choose a number of different pace groups. The 9 minute per mile pace was my group, this kept me in my zone 2 and ideal for base training. The 9 minute mile group was about 20 runners big and it sounded like most runner were in their zone 2 with all the chatting going on 😊
P.s. if you want to determine your zone 2 exactly…..book a lactate test with me 😜
Little bit more about Endorphins running groups:
Endorphins Run Groups are designed for individuals looking to enhance their physical fitness while enjoying the mental and emotional benefits of running in a supportive community. These groups focus not only on the physical aspects of running but through running also on the release of endorphins—natural chemicals in the brain that promote feelings of happiness and reduce stress. Participants typically meet regularly to run together, whether for casual jogs, structured training sessions, or preparing for races.
Joining an Endorphins Run club can foster a sense of belonging and motivation, as members encourage one another to achieve their personal fitness goals. The social aspect of running in a group can make workouts more enjoyable and help individuals push through challenges. Additionally, group leaders often provide guidance on running techniques, injury prevention, and training plans, making it easier for newcomers to get started and stay committed.
Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, Endorphins Run Groups offer a welcoming environment to improve your health, boost your mood, and connect with others who share a passion for running. With the added benefit of endorphin release, participants often find that their time spent running is not only a workout but also a pathway to improved mental well-being.
